Paying homage to the great vintage string synthesizers of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, EastWest's String Machine virtual instrument brings the past into the future. Produced by sound titans Doug Rogers and Nick Phoenix, String Machine includes samples from some of the greats – the ARP Solina, Oberheim OBX, Roland RS-505, and the Roland Jupiter 6 – and allows you to instantly combine them with modern strings, brass, woodwinds, and vocals to create unique vintage vibes perfect for your next pop, rock, or hip-hop masterpiece.
String Machine’s user interface takes inspiration from the design of vintage string machine synthesizers. From the chunky instrument switches adorned along the front panel, to the glide of envelope sliders, and the click of push buttons, String Machine’s form and function is informed by the original hardware units.
String Machines were well known for their ensemble chorus effects, and the one included in String Machine features 3 modes, each with distinct characteristics. With effect emulations modeled from the ARP Solina, and Roland VP-330 hardware units, along with a ‘Modern’ mode, our Ensemble Chorus effect delivers everything from vintage warmth and thickness, to modern transparency and dimension.
String Machine’s use is flexible, owing to its hybrid design of electronic and acoustic instruments. It fits right at home in a variety of genres, electronic or otherwise, but especially suitable for genres heavy on retro nostalgia, like chillwave or pop. Any piece of music that needs a large ensemble string pad would benefit by using String Machine.
INSTRUMENT GROUPS
String Machine features 4 color-coded instrument sections, including string machines and pads (red), string sections (green), solo woodwinds and brass (teal), and choirs and solo vocals (orange). Each instrument section features a number of instruments and alternatives, giving you countless ways to combine them into a diverse range of timbres, and the ease of mixing the individual instrument sections together to create rich, multi-layered pads.
PRESETS
String Machine comes with a small number of presets that demonstrate the type of sounds possible with String Machine, but we strongly encourage you to use String Machine as it was intended — creating your own presets with the interface controls, sliders, rocker switches, and ALT buttons — make them your own!

Various vintage guitars were sampled with up and down strokes, multiple velocities and picking styles, some with chords and effects. Basses used were the Hofner 500 Bass (1963) and Rickenbacker 4001S Bass (1964). Drums included a rare 1960 Ludwig downbeat kit with Zildjian cymbals.
The recording equipment was just as equally meticulously acquired. Items included very rare EMI REDD tube and TG12345 recording desks, Fairchild limiters, EMI RS124 modified Altec compressors, and Studer J-37 tube multi-tracks, among other microphones, amplifiers, and other outboard units.
Having worked on multiple Beatles albums, project engineer Ken Scott was able to recreate from his direct experience, many of the unique techniques developed by the Beatles during their musical odyssey. The Fab Four virtual instrument utilizes a dedicated playback engine, the PLAY Advanced Sample Engine, which provides an easy searchable browser and the ability for users to customize the sounds.

Drums were all multi-sampled with up to sixteen velocity layers, left and right hand. The sounds were all matched to a particular style, e.g. A Day in the Drums, Ticket to Drums, Yer Drums

The same kind of recording desks and preamps were used to record all instruments, including a very rare EMI REDD tube desk, EMI TG12345 desk (the same kind of desk used to record "Abbey Road" and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"), and EMI REDD47 preamps
The same kind of limiters (Fairchild) and compressors (rare EMI RS124 modified Altec) were used for dynamics control
The same kind of Studer J-37 tube 4-track was used to record everything

Stereo Swap allows the user to instantly swap the left and right channels. Mono from left, mono from right, or mono sum allow for instant conversion from stereo to mono

Guitars (some costing over $200,000 each) played by Laurence Juber (Paul McCartney and Wings) include Gretsch Firebird (1959), Gretsch Tennessean (1963), Rickenbacker 360-12 (1965), Martin D-28 (1966), Fender Stratocaster (1956), Epiphone Casino (1965), Fender Telecaster (1951), Gibson SG (1960), Les Paul Goldtop (1957), Gibson J200 (1966), Hofner 500 Bass (1963) and Rickenbacker 4001S Bass (1964)

Most of the sounds would be impossible to create without all of the above equipment. For example, the "revostortion" guitar sound was created by feeding an Epiphone Casino guitar into one EMI REDD 47 preamp, and the output into a second EMI REDD 47 preamp, which is exactly how it was created originally by the EMI/Abbey Road engineers
Drums played by Denny Seiwell (Paul McCartney and Wings) include a rare 1960 Ludwig downbeat kit with Zildjian cymbals (snare 5 x 14; toms 9 x 13 / 16 x 16; kick 22 x 14; Zildjan 20" crash ride; 18" crash medium; 14" Hi-Hat)
Drums are all multi-sampled with up to 16 velocity layers, left and right hand. The sounds were all matched to a particular style (e.g. A Day in the Drums, Ticket to Drums, Yer Drums). We even recorded some heavily modulated cymbals through a Fairchild limiter for authenticity

FabFilter One
For FabFilter One, we have put tremendous effort in creating the best cut-off filter ever. Our new design approach has resulted in the fattest and smoothest self-oscillating digital filter you have ever heard. It has been tuned carefully to achieve the character and warmth of a classic analog synthesizer. FabFilter One’s filter sounds raw but never cheap or ‘digital’, even at full resonance.
The filter is fed by an equally high-quality solid-sounding oscillator, developed from scratch to be completely aliasing-free. It features sawtooth, triangle, and square wave forms with pulse width modulation.
The oscillator and the filter can be modulated by the LFO and the EG. The LFO offers triangle and square wave forms, with adjustable wave balance so any wave form between sawtooth and triangle can be selected. The tempo can be synchronized to the host. The EG has the usual ADSR knobs, but with a perfectly fine-tuned feel. Also, it has an additional Hold setting that extends the time keys are held down.
What FabFilter One excels at is the attention to detail and fine-tuning that is visible throughout the plug-in. For example, the portamento feature doesn't just slide from one note to another, but uses a carefully selected algorithm to make your playing more lively and give it just that little extra bit of magic.
Smart Parameter Interpolation handles changes to any of FabFilter One's parameters, ensuring both responsiveness and smooth transitions. There are no annoying digital clicks and zipper effects, and even MIDI controller changes are handled perfectly smooth.
Naturally, the FabFilter One plug-in handles all parameter changes at sample accuracy and it can be used with arbitrary sample rates. FabFilter Simplon is a simplified version of FabFilter Volcano 2 with two independent multimode filters providing low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass responses with 12/24/48 dB/octave slopes. The filters can be used in serial or parallel mode.
Originally developed for FabFilter One, Simplon's filters were designed from the ground up to be the fattest and smoothest self-oscillating digital filters possible. Simplon's filters sound raw but never cheap or ‘digital’, even at full resonance.

OVERVIEW
The Yamaha CFX is an incredible concert grand piano characterised by a wide palette of tonal colors and the ability to create the most subtle, expressive nuances. To create an incredible virtual piano, Garritan matched this beautiful instrument with the stunning acoustics of Abbey Road's Studio One. To this, they added a team of world-class engineers who leveraged an exceptional collection of microphones and outboard gear to create the finest sampled piano ever captured.
All 20 layers of detail from the original CFX are represented, including separate sample sets for pedals-up, sustain pedal down and soft pedaling. The CFX Lite also adds pedaling and other features not found in the original CFX Concert Grand. These include partial and re-pedaling functionality plus more than 20 additional impulses captured from Abbey Road Studios’ legendary outboard reverb equipment.
The CFX Lite includes the powerful ARIA player, and is designed to be a perfect addition to music notation-based programs, like Finale, as well as to all sequencers and digital audio work stations. It is also equally at home in live usage as it is in a studio setting.

Timbre Effect
CFX Lite uses a higher or lower sample than the pitch you play (depending on the knob setting) and transposes it, producing the altered timbre at the correct pitch. When the Timbre Effect knob is at 50%, you'll experience the natural timbre of the sampled Yamaha CFX concert grand piano. Turn the Timbre Effect knob above 50% to give the piano a more plucked sound, and turn the Timbre Effect knob below 50% for a less percussive sound.
This can be used to emulate the George Martin technique utilized on "In My Life"

Microphone Perspectives: To expand your creative possibilities, Abbey Road Studios' engineers created three discrete microphone perspectives: Classic, Contemporary, and Player.
Classic:
The Classic perspective most faithfully captures the natural tonal character, clarity and nuance of the instrument. Close - 2 x Neumann M49 and 2 x Neumann KM184 Microphones: As every piano, recording venue, repertoire and pianist are different, the M49 and KM184 are used to capture a close detailed sound, which is especially good for chamber music. Mid Field/Wide - 2 x DPA 4006 Microphones: The DPA 4006's placed at each end of the piano create a wider and more spacious sound picture. Main - 2 x Neumann TLM50 Microphones: The Neumann TLM50 are placed 2m away from the instrument and at 2.6m in height. This captures the overall complex frequency response and dynamic range of a grand piano.
Contemporary:
The Contemporary perspective creates a piano sound that is bright and hard with lots of attack from the hammers, but also maintains the piano's warmth with intimate ambience. Close - AKG C12 & D19 Microphones: The AKG C12 is a bright sounding valve microphone with bite and some nice valve warmth. The mono D19 placed in the centre over the hammers was run via a classic REDD.47 valve microphone preamp, adding central focus and "poke" to the close sound of this set up. Ambience - Schoeps MK 2H Microphones: For the Ambience microphones Schoeps MK 2H are used in a close position. They are able to bring the sound of the room to the mix, without losing too much of the definition of the piano's initial attack.
Player:
The Player perspective offers the experience of playing the CFX, from the piano bench, in Studio One, particularly when reproduced over high quality headphones. Close - 2 x Neumann KM84 Microphones: This is a straightforward stereo pair placed closely and directly over the hammers. It provides an immediate sound of the piano with little coloration from the room. Player - Neumann KU100 Dummy Head: The Binaural KU100 Dummy Head was placed directly behind the musicians head. This provides an intimacy to the instrument mixed with the unmistakable sense of playing the instrument in the acoustics of Studio One.
The Piano
The mighty CFX concert Grand is Yamaha's flagship piano. It represents the pinnacle of what is truly possible when no expense or resource is spared to create the ultimate concert grand piano. To create this piano, a team of 40 of the world's most talented piano designers, craftsmen and pianists spent 20 years developing this piano; it truly is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, power and beauty. Each CFX is painstakingly hand-crafted by a small, dedicated team and each CFX has a fully removable action that can be specifically calibrated for the setting, performer and even the repertoire. This is the first time it has been sampled for a software library!
The Studio
Since it's inauguration by Sir Edward Elgar in 1931, Abbey Road Studio One has become one of the most famous and busiest recording spaces in the world. From the Beatles to Adele and from Star Wars to James Bond, it is almost certain that you have something in your media collection that was recorded in Studio One. It is the venue to which the world's top musicians and composers turn when they require the very best.
The Recording
The sound of the CFX was captured by a team of highly experienced Abbey Road Studios recording engineers, each contributing decades of knowledge in recording pianos for a variety of applications. At their disposal was arguably the richest and most storied microphone collection available anywhere.
The entire Garritan team has endeavored to create a virtual instrument that is an organic, expressive and versatile tool for the creation of piano music of any kind.
