The Garritan Yamaha CFX Concert Grand Piano virtual instrument library captures the awesome Yamaha CFX Concert Grand Piano in Abbey Road Studios' legendary Studio One. Award-winning engineers produced three discrete microphone perspectives to create a virtual piano of breathtaking power and beauty.

Microphone Perspectives: To expand your creative possibilities, Abbey Road Studios' engineers created three discrete microphone perspectives: Classic, Contemporary, and Player.

Classic:

The Classic perspective most faithfully captures the natural tonal character, clarity and nuance of the instrument. Close - 2 x Neumann M49 and 2 x Neumann KM184 Microphones: As every piano, recording venue, repertoire and pianist are different, the M49 and KM184 are used to capture a close detailed sound, which is especially good for chamber music. Mid Field/Wide - 2 x DPA 4006 Microphones: The DPA 4006's placed at each end of the piano create a wider and more spacious sound picture. Main - 2 x Neumann TLM50 Microphones: The Neumann TLM50 are placed 2m away from the instrument and at 2.6m in height. This captures the overall complex frequency response and dynamic range of a grand piano.

Contemporary:

The Contemporary perspective creates a piano sound that is bright and hard with lots of attack from the hammers, but also maintains the piano's warmth with intimate ambience. Close - AKG C12 & D19 Microphones: The AKG C12 is a bright sounding valve microphone with bite and some nice valve warmth. The mono D19 placed in the centre over the hammers was run via a classic REDD.47 valve microphone preamp, adding central focus and "poke" to the close sound of this set up. Ambience - Schoeps MK 2H Microphones: For the Ambience microphones Schoeps MK 2H are used in a close position. They are able to bring the sound of the room to the mix, without losing too much of the definition of the piano's initial attack.

Player:

The Player perspective offers the experience of playing the CFX, from the piano bench, in Studio One, particularly when reproduced over high quality headphones. Close - 2 x Neumann KM84 Microphones: This is a straightforward stereo pair placed closely and directly over the hammers. It provides an immediate sound of the piano with little coloration from the room. Player - Neumann KU100 Dummy Head: The Binaural KU100 Dummy Head was placed directly behind the musicians head. This provides an intimacy to the instrument mixed with the unmistakable sense of playing the instrument in the acoustics of Studio One.

The Piano

The mighty CFX concert Grand is Yamaha's flagship piano. It represents the pinnacle of what is truly possible when no expense or resource is spared to create the ultimate concert grand piano. To create this piano, a team of 40 of the world's most talented piano designers, craftsmen and pianists spent 20 years developing this piano; it truly is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, power and beauty. Each CFX is painstakingly hand-crafted by a small, dedicated team and each CFX has a fully removable action that can be specifically calibrated for the setting, performer and even the repertoire. This is the first time it has been sampled for a software library!

The Studio

Since it's inauguration by Sir Edward Elgar in 1931, Abbey Road Studio One has become one of the most famous and busiest recording spaces in the world. From the Beatles to Adele and from Star Wars to James Bond, it is almost certain that you have something in your media collection that was recorded in Studio One. It is the venue to which the world's top musicians and composers turn when they require the very best.

The Recording

The sound of the CFX was captured by a team of highly experienced Abbey Road Studios recording engineers, each contributing decades of knowledge in recording pianos for a variety of applications. At their disposal was arguably the richest and most storied microphone collection available anywhere.

The entire Garritan team has endeavored to create a virtual instrument that is an organic, expressive and versatile tool for the creation of piano music of any kind. Garritan's dedication to accessibility and excellence is epitomized in the CFX Concert Grand Library. Without this new virtual instrument, few would have access to Yamaha's phenomenal CFX concert grand piano, let alone the opportunity to record in Abbey Road Studios' historic Studio One with the greatest technicians and recording equipment in the world.

MOTU Electric Keys Mac PC Software Synthesizer

Electric Keys is a cross-platform virtual instrument that delivers authentic sounds of 50 classic, vintage electric keyboard instruments from the last 40 years. This massive 40GB sound library includes over 20,000 meticulously crafted 24-bit 96 kHz multi-samples of legendary electric pianos, electric organs, clavinets, Wurlitzers, tape samplers, string machines, keyboard basses and other rare and exotic electric keyboard instruments.

Electric Keys puts a slice of music history at your fingertips in the form of classic and rare electric keyboard instrument sounds, said Jim Cooper, Director of Marketing for MOTU. You can play all those familiar electric keyboard riffs you know so well from the last four decades of rock, pop, funk and jazz, plus you get an intriguing assortment of rare and exotic keyboard sounds that are sure to delight even vintage keyboard devotees. We carefully recorded and mastered the samples to the very highest standards for use in live performance and recording projects of any kind.

Fifty well-preserved and maintained vintage instruments were used to create the sounds in Electric Keys, including models from Fender, Yamaha, Korg, Roland, Hammond, Wurlitzer, Hohner, Elka, Farfisa, Mellotron, Moog, RMI, Arp and others. Most instrument samples are supplied at 24-bit 96 kHz resolution, but they can be played at any standard sample rate via Electric Keys' flexible 32-bit UVI playback engine. Presets consist of carefully crafted multi-samples with multiple velocities, layers and/or release samples, depending on the instrument. Samples are streamed from disk, so even large presets load quickly and conserve computer memory. A simple and attractive software interface
The Electric Keys window offers a few simple controls, including volume, pan, tone and tremolo settings, along with two preset slots, which allow users to layer two sounds using the convenient multi-column preset browser. When a preset loads, the background displays the "skin" for the corresponding bank, but the controls and their operation remain the same, regardless of the unique look and feel for each bank. Once one or two sounds are loaded, the user can simply play, adjusting parameters as desired, while CPU-efficient 256-note polyphony ensures that notes are never cut off due to voice-stealing.

All parameters can be automated via convenient "MIDI learn", where the user can simply right-click any control to assign any MIDI controller. Users can load and save "combis" consisting of a snapshot of the entire plug-in, including effects. Combis can be shared among plug-in formats and the stand-alone version - even across computer platforms. Dozens of factory presets and combis are supplied.

The three-dimensional piano keys across the bottom of the Electric Keys window highlight during playback. Users can click the keys to audition sounds.

Separate multi-effects rack
Users can click the FX button to open the FX-Rack, which is a separate window with eight effects that can be applied individually or in combination as a multi-effect to any preset. Effects include amp simulation, filter, chorus, flanger, phaser, UVinyl (to add "wear and tear"), delay and reverb. Since effects can be loaded, created and saved independently of instrument presets, it is easy to mix and match effects with presets, allowing users to experiment with practically infinite combinations. All effects parameters can be automated with one-click "MIDI Learn" CC assignments.

Plug-in and stand-alone operation
Electric Keys supports all major plug-in formats on Mac OS X and Windows (XP and Vista), including VST, DXi, MAS, Audio Units and RTAS. It also runs as a stand-alone application.

Large hard drive(s), preferably at least 100 GB. The disk on which the sounds are stored must be a fast hard disk. See “Hard disk format”, below, for additional requirements.
An iLok USB Smart Key from Pace Anti-Piracy. MachFive 3 is compatible with iLok 1 and 2. PLEASE NOTE: an iLok key is not included in the MachFive 3 package. If you are are upgrading from a previous version of MachFive, you can use your MachFive version 1 or 2 iLok for your new version 3 license, which is downloaded from ilok.com.
A free USB port for the iLok USB key. Note that if you have multiple products which use iLoks for authorization you can consolidate multiple authorizations onto a single iLok.
A CD/DVD disk drive for installation.
A digital audio workstation program or other program that hosts AU, VST, or RTAS instrument plug-ins. Alternatively, MachFive can be used as a standalone application.

Hard disk format

The default file system format for disk drives on Mac OS X and Windows are compatible with MachFive’s soundbank files:

Mac OS X: HFS+ (Mac OS Extended, journaled or unjournaled)
Windows: NTFS

The FAT32 format is not compatible with MachFive’s soundbank files, as it does not allow file sizes greater than 4 GB.
