The 122mkII is the de-facto industry standard professional mastering and broadcast cassette deck, and with good reason. Few products receive this much attention to detail during every aspect of the production.

The Tascam 122 Mk II was a radical upgrade to the original 122. It featured a three-motor transport with full-logic control, enabling features such as digital tape counter display, memory and return to zero and tape run time TRT display. All transport functions and status indicators are accessible via a rear-panel remote connector. Variable pitch control was also available.

The Mk II continued with one of the 122’s popular features, front-panel bias/level tweaks. Proper bias settings varied considerably among tape brands, so getting top performance out of a deck required users to standardize on one brand, and tune up the machine with that tape. In the real world, different brands of tape were often used. In addition to the internal tweaks on the main circuit board, the 122 had switch-selectable front-panel bias and level tweaks. When used in conjunction with the built-in 400 Hz/10 kHz oscillator and VU meters, users could tune the bias up to whatever tape was at hand.

Dolby HX Pro was added to the 122 Mk II. This “active bias” technique largely overcame the problems with self-bias and loss of high frequencies in recordings by dynamically adjusting the bias oscillator to maintain constant bias levels. The result was improved high-frequency performance with headroom improvements up to six dB. HX Pro was a one-way process. Unlike Dolby B and C, there was no decoding necessary to reap the benefits.

The tape handling on the 122mkIII was designed from the ground up for optimum performance. The FG Servo Direct Drive Capstan is used exclusively on this deck, providing the smoothest tape handling of any deck on the market. This results the best wow and flutter characteristics available. Cobalt amorphous record and play heads were designed specifically for this deck, offering the excellent sound quality and longer life.

Plus, more convenience features were added to this deck. The LA-112 balancing kit, optional on other Professional Series decks, is standard equipment on the 122mkIII. Gear/clutch coupled input controls allow easier setting of input levels. Built-in oscillators and front panel bias controls allow you to easily adjust your 122mkIII for optimal performance with various tape brands and types.

Like the other Professional Series decks, the 122mkIII also has a parallel remote port with fader start function and status tallies, making the 122mkIII a perfect fit for broadcast studios. It also has the input monitor selectors, MPX filters, Dolby NR and HX Pro, and the rest of the pro functions desired by professionals.
