Apogee Element 24 10x12 Thunderbolt Interface for Mac

Using the same technology of the highly-regarded Symphony I/O MKII, Ensemble Thunderbolt, and Groove, the Element 24 offers 10x12 of audio I/O for Mac, well suited for producers, engineers, bands, or those looking for professional-quality conversion. The Element features boutique-quality mic preamps and selectable 48V phantom power for connecting microphones, instruments, or line-level sources. The 24 offers two analog inputs via two XLR-1/4" combo connectors, while the four outputs are offered via two balanced XLR, and one 1/4" TRS stereo headphone connectors.

Additional I/O is offered from a single set of optical TOSLINK ports providing ADAT, SMUX, and S/PDIF protocols. Word clock I/O is also provided for syncing with other digital audio gear. Clocking

An audio interface relies on a clock source like an orchestra relies on a conductor. A digital audio clock provides a timing signal to all the parts of a digital audio system so that each part of the AD/DA process may be synchronized. Element has its own built-in clock source and provides professional Word Clock IN and OUT for syncing with other digital audio gear. Use Element as the master clock to take advantage of Apogee's superior built-in clocking technology.

Thunderbolt Connectivity

The Element Series Thunderbolt driver offers incredible low-latency performance (1.41 ms round-trip) and rock-solid stability. Apogee's custom driver uses less of your computer's CPU power with the help of Direct Memory Access (DMA) technology. This allows you to run more plug-ins and monitor through your DAW at a low buffer setting. Element's low-latency driver means you don't have to choose between power and speed.

Apogee Control Software

The modern, streamlined Apogee Control interface app with Essentials Control Strip window offers extensive flexibility to customize your workflow and adapt to your creativity. It lets you access all I/O controls and settings for your Element hardware. Select your input type, adjust input/output levels, configure up to 3 different low-latency mixers, and more. This version gives the option to install both the Clarett Thunderbolt driver (version 4.25.0.335) and the Scarlett USB driver (version 4.14.0.158).

Known issues:

- Glitchy audio/enumeration issues when using Thunderbolt 3 connections via an adapter. Please note that Thunderbolt 3 connectivity is NOT yet supported.

- Cubase 8.5 crashes after the save when closing down a project with MIDI tracks.

- Driver installer optimisations

Due to the vast range of possible hardware combinations, their approach for Thunderbolt support on Windows is to qualify specific systems. They are currently testing with the following machines:

MOTU 828x Thunderbolt & USB Mac PC Audio MIDI Interface

MOTU brings the Next Generation audio interface to the latest computers!

The 828x is MOTU's most advanced “hybrid” audio interface, it connects to any Mac or PC using ultra-fast Thunderbolt™ technology or high-speed USB 2.0 and delivers DSP effects and mixing for all 28 inputs and 30 outputs with 32-bit floating point processing. Once again it raises the bar with innovative new features, enhanced standard features that remain unique, superb sound and reliable performance.

The 828x is equally well-suited for studio and stage, with or without a computer. As an interface or standalone mixer, the 828x provides two XLR/TRS “combo” mic/guitar inputs, 8 balanced TRS analog in/out, two banks of optical (ADAT and TOSLink formats), S/PDIF (coax) digital I/O, dedicated main outs on XLRs, and two front panel headphone jacks with independent volume control. The mic/guitar combo inputs are equipped with transparent preamps, digitally controlled trim with plenty of gain, a true high-impedance guitar input, individual 48V phantom power, -20 dB pad, and V-Limit™, a hardware limiter that helps prevent digital clipping from overloaded input signals as high as +12 dB above zero with no clipping or harsh artifacts. Additional protection can be applied with Soft Clip™.

DC-coupled TRS outputs — Use the 828x with Volta™ (sold separately) to manipulate and sequence voltage-controlled modular synthesizers from a host DAW.
Instrument tuner and audio analysis tools — Includes an oscilloscope, real-time FFT, X-Y Plot, and graphic phase analysis.

All analog inputs are equipped with digitally controlled analog trim controls that allow adjustments in 1 dB increments. The mic/guitar input trims can be adjusted using front-panel digital rotary encoders that provide feedback in the front panel LCD, while all quarter-inch TRS inputs can be trimmed from the included cross-platform CueMix FX software. Different trim configurations can be saved as files on disk for instant recall.

Connect any studio gear, including microphones, guitars, synths, keyboards, drum machines and even effects processors. Record, monitor, route and process all of these live inputs using the professional on-board CueMix FX digital mixer – with no latency and no processor strain on the computer. Apply hardware DSP-driven effects processing to inputs, outputs, and busses independent of the host computer. Add Classic Reverb™ with lengths up to 60 seconds. Further sculpt your sound with 7-band parametric EQ featuring filter types carefully modeled after British analog console EQs. Choose between two forms of compression: a conventional compressor and the Leveler™, an accurate model of the legendary LA-2A™ optical compressor that provides vintage, musical automatic gain control.

Analyze and scope any mono or stereo audio stream with advanced diagnostic tools, including a full-screen real-time FFT display, spectrogram “waterfall” display, full-featured oscilloscope, X-Y plot, and linear/polar phase analysis graphs.

After programming the on-board mixing in the studio, unplug the 828x from the computer and take it on the road for operation as a stand-alone mixer with effects. All mixing and effects parameters are adjustable using the front panel backlit LCD.

Additional advanced features include 192 kHz operation, Direct Digital Synthesis™ (DDS) precision clocking, direct SMPTE time code sync (no extra synchronizer needed), MIDI I/O and much more. Cross-platform software includes the CueMix FX application and WDM/ASIO/Core Audio drivers for Mac (OS X) and Windows (8, 7 and Vista). The included AudioDesk® workstation software provides 24-bit recording/editing and 32-bit mixing/processing/mastering.
