System Requirements

• A minimum of 2 GB of RAM is required. However, since MachFive loads samples (or a portion of the samples) into the computer's RAM add as much RAM as possible to your computer; 4 GB is recommended. MachFive also allows samples to be streamed directly from disk thus freeing up RAM.
• Large hard drive(s), preferably at least 100 GB. The disk on which the sounds are stored must be a fast hard disk. See “Hard disk format”, below, for additional requirements.
• An iLok USB Smart Key from Pace Anti-Piracy. MachFive 3 is compatible with iLok 1 and 2. PLEASE NOTE: an iLok key is not included in the MachFive 3 package. If you are are upgrading from a previous version of MachFive, you can use your MachFive version 1 or 2 iLok for your new version 3 license, which is downloaded from ilok.com.
• A free USB port for the iLok USB key. Note that if you have multiple products which use iLoks for authorization you can consolidate multiple authorizations onto a single iLok.
• A CD/DVD disk drive for installation.
• A digital audio workstation program or other program that hosts AU, VST, or RTAS instrument plug-ins. Alternatively, MachFive can be used as a standalone application.

Mac systems

• Intel Core Duo CPU 1.83 GHz or faster; multiple processors or a multi-core processor is required. Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 2.0 GHz or faster recommended. Macs with PowerPC CPUs are not supported.
• Mac OS X version 10.8, 10.7, 10.6, or 10.5 (v10.5.8 or later is required).

Windows systems

64-bit operation

For native 64-bit operation, MachFive has the following additional requirements:

Hard disk format

Due to the large size of MachFive’s factory soundbank UFS files, the disk containing the soundbank files must be able to support individual files larger than 4 GB. This is determined by the disk’s file system format.

The default file system format for disk drives on Mac OS X and Windows are compatible with MachFive’s soundbank files:

• Mac OS X: HFS+ (Mac OS Extended, journaled or unjournaled)
• Windows: NTFS

The FAT32 format is not compatible with MachFive’s soundbank files, as it does not allow file sizes greater than 4 GB.

The Symphonic Instrument is a CPU-efficient plug-in that saves with the host application document for instant recall and is compatible with all major plug in formats for Mac OS X and Windows.

Dozens of Ensembles

The MOTU Symphonic Instrument allows one to load and save Multis - a collection of instruments that can be loaded and saved together as an ensemble, complete with an acoustic space (reverb setting,) volume, panning, tone control and everything needed to save and instantly recall a perfectly balanced, unified ensemble. Dozens of preset ensembles are included, such as Brass Quintet, Choirs and Classical Guitar, Eight French Horns, Concert Mallet and Percussion and Baroque Orchestra. And the user can of course, create and save their own ensembles that are then reloadable in one easy step.

Easy to Navigate Browser

Double-clicking one of the sixteen parts opens the multi-column instrument browser. Instruments are clearly presented and intuitively organized by category. Finding and auditioning the instrument required takes only seconds.

Dynamic Performance with Expert Mode

Expert mode allows one to dynamically add, remove and stack (layer) multiple Symphonic Instrument sounds while playing them from a MIDI controller. Instruments can be brought in and out, on the fly, using key switches, velocity ranges or note ranges. Crossfading between instruments is also possible by sending continuous MIDI data (expression controllers) from a mod wheel or other device.

Realistic Expression with MIDI Controllers

Using MIDI continuous controller data from a mod wheel, foot pedal, automated fader control surface or other MIDI control source achieves incredibly realistic, dynamic performances from the Symphonic Instrument. Most parameters can be mapped to external control, providing hands-on, real-time expressive control over the instruments. Additionally, MIDI modulation can be assigned to crucial individual parameters such as filter cutoff frequency for even deeper expressiveness.

Compatibility with MachFive

The Symphonic Instrument sounds can be loaded into MachFive. This allows the user to use the unified MachFive interface to incorporate the huge library into the MachFive-driven workflow. One can also take full advantage of MachFive's extensive Expert Mode features for even more dynamic performance control over the Symphonic Instrument sounds.

Scroll Wheel Support

For additional convenience and fast operation, the Symphonic Instrument supports the scroll wheel on a scroll wheel based mouse. It can be used to quickly adjust settings or choose an instrument.

Setting an upper split adds a solo accompaniment instrument playing above the piano. Solo sounds include flute, clarinet, acoustic guitar, etc. Combis can have both an upper and lower split. The zones, or range of keys where each instrument will play, can abut or overlap as you desire. The velocity response can be set to make the most of your keyboard and playing style.

Under the expert guidance of SONiVOX musical sound connoisseur Jennifer Hruska, each sample session was faithfully recorded by Emmy award-winning engineers Antonio Oliart and RIAA award-winning engineer John Bono. The players were positioned using orchestrally-correct seating, and measures were even taken to compensate for the sound-absorption of any players absent on that particular day. In order to retain a realistic "organic" feel, they used absolutely minimal post-recording electronic processing. They used two B&K 4011 microphones to preserve the highly-desired front-of-hall sound (you know, the "good seats"), while superior-grade spot mics accurately captured each instrument's individual detail.
